If you have not uploaded the latest blog assignment (due today, November 21), you have until tomorrow, 11/22, to post something.

Please be aware that there is no culture class on Monday, 11/28. We will meet on Wednesday, 11/30. Bring any photos or writings with you so that you can work on your final project during class.

Please EMAIL me if you have any questions! Enjoy Thanksgiving!

Blog post entry and picture upload due before class on Monday, November 21
You have 2 pieces of homework for Monday.

1) Please respond to the following question in a blog post (100-125 words for Intermediate Writing students and 125-150 for Advanced Writing students):
Think about your own situation as an immigrant in the United States, then think about the situation of Italian Americans, Hondurans, Irish Americans, and German Americans. Do you think it is easy or difficult to remain in an isolated cultural group (like the Vietnamese in New Orleans East)? Explain aspects that you think would make doing this easy and which aspects you think would make this difficult.

2) Post a picture from your trip to New Orleans East. Pick your favorite thing that you saw and write a brief description!

Please email me by Sunday night if you have any questions.

Blog post and Google Map entry due by 11:59 PM, Sunday, November 6
Your assignment has two parts.
Part 1: Enter address of your house onto our Google Map. If you do not remember how to get to the Google Map, here is a link: http://liepculturefall2011.blogspot.com/p/google-map-of-new-orleans.html

Part 2: You have the option of answering one of the two writing prompts below. Since we are talking about Halloween, I want you to try and be a little bit creative this week! Both of the writing prompts ask you to put yourself into an imaginary position and write about how you would respond. Please give yourself enough time to think and respond!

Length requirements:
If you are in Intermediate Writing, you must write 100-125 words. If you are in Advanced Writing, you must write 125-150 words.

Topics:
-Imagine you were alive in 1938 and that you heard the radio broadcast from War of the Worlds. Would you have believed the radio show? Why or why not? If so, how might you have reacted?

-Pick your favorite house from the tour in the French Quarter today. Do some more research on the house. Imagine that you actually saw the ghost(s) that haunt the house. How did the ghost let you know that it was there? How would you respond? Would you tell anyone? If so, what would you tell them?

A festival for Mahalia Jackson!
THIS IS NOT HOMEWORK! :) There is a great festival for Mahalia Jackson over the next week! Many activities are free. Check out this article and schedule of events if you are interesting in going to any of this!

Information about our trip on Wednesday, October 12 to the Barataria
For Wednesday, please arrive at 1:25 PM. We will be riding over to the Barataria with the goal of arriving at the Visitor's Center at 2 PM. Please be on time and wear appropriate clothing! I checked the weather for Wednesday, and it says it is supposed to be 84 degrees and sunny. It might be hot, so you might want to wear clothes that are not too heavy. Bring any of these that you think you need: water, sunscreen, and bug spray. Please do not forget to bring a camera!

If anyone is interested in getting extra credit (and replacing one missed blog) by writing a piece about the Barataria for the LIEP blog, please email me before class. I am making you a worksheet so that you can take notes and I need to know how many copies I need to bring with me. Your entries for the LIEP blog will be due to me before class on Wednesday, October 19.

Thanks again for being awesome students, and I will see all of you on Wednesday!

Homework from September 28 (to be completed by October 3):
1) For Monday, please post your 3 favorite pictures of houses that you found in an entry on the blog. Write 3-4 sentences about each house--why do you like it? What type of house is it? How can you tell that it is this particular type of house? What did the houses on either side of it look like? Also, write 2-3 sentences about whether or not you think there is a difference between the culture of the people who lived in the houses on St. Charles and the people who lived in the houses in the Marigny. Why or why not? Did the type of houses that they had have anything to do with the difference in culture? This post is due by midnight on Sunday. We will be looking at the posts together as a class, so make sure that your work is up!

2) Find your name below. Use Wikipedia to research these terms and a dictionary to research the definition of the word that you are assigned. Look at only the first paragraph in Wikipedia to get a general overview and write one or two sentences summarizing what you read.
James, research Jim Crow Laws and find a definition for "caricature."
Andy, research Minstrel Shows and find a definition for "integration."
Grace, research Blackface and find a definition for "exploitation."
Kim, research Satchmo and find a definition for "stereotype."
Fahad, research Separate but Equal and find a definition for "inferior."
Tiniya, research Minstrel Shows and find a definition for "superior."
Max, research Jim Crow Laws and find a definition for "appropriation."
Fernando, research Separate but Equal and find a definition for "discrimination."
You MUST have a definition for these words when you walk into class. Your classmates are depending on you!

Homework from September 26 (to be completed by September 28):
1) Learn the difference between a shotgun and a creole cottage. Explore this website if you need some guidance. http://www.neworleansonline.com/neworleans/architecture/archtypes.html
2) Bring a camera. Bring comfortable walking shoes.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Homework from September 14 (to be completed by September 19):
1) Your first blog post is due on Monday, September 19. Please choose one of the two questions below to answer. After looking at length, I have reconsidered the length requirements:
Intermediate Writing students need to write between 75-100 words, and Advanced Writing students need to write 125-150 words. Please consider this a gift and put some time and thought into your assignment.
Questions:
**Has your country ever experienced a disaster like the BP oil spill? What happened? Was it resolved? If so, how? If not, why not?

**Are there groups in your country like the Native Americans? How are they treated? How are they different than Native Americans?

2) Look at and read pages 1-2 on this link to the Barataria educational page. Also, look up the Barataria on a map.

3) Experiment with uploading an image to the blog in a post. If you need instructions, please check out this link to a how-to page: http://www.google.com/support/blogger/bin/answer.py?answer=41641

Homework from September 12 (to be completed by September 14):
1) Research the BP oil disaster. Come to class prepared to talk a little bit about it.
2) Go into your gmail and accept my invitation to post to my blog. Log into blogger.com and post something to the LIEP Fall 2011 Culture blog.
3) Read the rest of the page linked here about Native Americans, blood classifications, and being federally recognized.
4) A topic to start thinking about: wetlands, erosion, and restoration.

A quick note:
More than likely, we will be going to the US Mint next week to view "Race: Are we so different?" at the US Mint in the French Quarter. I am going to try to have my van driver training done by then so that we can take the van. Entrance to the museum will cost $6. We will probably have time to stop somewhere for a cup of coffee and a snack. If anyone has any suggestions or requests of places that we can go, I would love your input! *No bars ;) *

Homework from September 7 (to be completed by September 12):
Think about the following questions:
-What do you know about Native Americans?
-What (if anything) do you know about Native Americans living in Louisiana?

Watch the video that I have embedded below about Native Americans.
